About Us

  Your Sister’s Project’s History Page

Your Sister’s Project, Inc. was founded in September 1996 as a grassroots community based organization. September , 2001 YSP received its 501© 3, letter of determination as a tax exempt, non-profit human and social services organization.

Ms. Shirley Muhammad founded and developed the Sankofa Female Rites of Passage program upon her visit to Accra, Ghanain September, 1996. It was implemented at the Unity Lutheran Community Church, located in Homewood, the East End section of the city of Pittsburgh. The program was a result of young girls living in single-parent household, with substance abusing parents. As a result, each of the girls was at risk for substance abusing/dealing behavior, teen pregnancy and school drop-out.

Your Sister’s Project, Inc has a financial literacy (or asset development) program because in 2005, Pennsylvania was among Hong Kong Singapore Banking Corporation (HSBC) strategic state in which HSBC offered financial services, thereby making it a prime state in which to offer consumer education services such as financial literacy education, training and outreach using the help of YSP as an affiliate partner nationwide. YSP has provided financial literacy education and training to over 125 families and service providers in Allegheny County.

We have established a high degree of credibility among the community grant makers, and funders. With your support, we can make that difference in the lives of our families and the future of our community.

Much Affinity, Reality and Communication to you all!
